LETS GET THOSE SEEDS STARTED !
We have everything you need to get going whether you have a backyard green house or a little extra space in a store room.
February is a good time to start pansies and other perennials as these take a long time to grow. Each seed type has different requirements to germinate. Basically these are
Light:Extra light can be supplied by fluorescent fixtures and bulbs. Special light bulbs are called full spectrum, the brand names are varied, Vita light, Ott light, and Verilux are a few names. We carry Jump start fixtures and replacement bulbs. The jumpstart puts out about 3 times the light of an ordinary bulb. If you have a 4’ shop light this can be modified into a homemade version of what we carry. The important thing is that the light needs to be about 6” from your seedlings.
Heat: Now this part is important because seeds may need a certain temperature to break dormancy. I use the Hydrofarm heating mat for germination as it keeps the dirt at about 70 degrees in my house. You can use a dirt thermometer to determine the soil temperature at you house.
Moisture: Once you have started the seeds it is very important to not let them dry out as this will kill them. I use a dome to keep them from drying out. You can purchase one of the ready made ones or make your own by adding Suran wrap or a baggy to the top of your individual pots.
Planting media: It is very important to use a sterile planting medium; in fact everything surrounding your seeds should be sterile. You can soak all of your recycled pots etc in a bleach solution(be sure and rinse off the bleach before using) If you don’t chose to buy new soil you can sterilize dirt in a 200 degree oven till it reaches 189 degrees.
Oxygen: all seeds need to have air to breath, make sure your growing media is loose and well aerated.
The next step is to find out if your seed needs a little help. We have found a few different seed germination databases listed on the web. Here is a couple.

Scarification:
Nature has ways to help seeds flourish, animals eat them carry them away and leave them in another place to grow, while passing thru their insides they go thru a process called Scarification.
To get this effect at home you can use a couple methods. Either soak in hot water over night or use a piece of sand paper to scar the outer seed. This allows water to penetrate the seed coat.
Stratification:
Some seed require periods of cold or warm moist temperatures, much like our winters, to germinate. This is called stratification. By looking at you germination table you can find individual seed requirements. Here also you can determine weather your seed needs dark or light to germinate.
When you seedlings start to rise the first thing you will see are the embryonic first leaves called the cotyledon leaves. The next leaves are true leaves and by the time you see these you should have the dome or plastic removed so you don’t get mildew. At this time you may also want to remove them from the heating pad.
Heat plays a very important roll in either pushing growth or slowing it and depending on our weather you may want to do either.
